Semen Pruni, known as "Chinese dwarf cherry seed" in English, is derived from the plant Prunus humilis, belonging to the Rosaceae family.
This plant is native to the northern temperate regions of China, Korea, and some parts of Russia. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Yu Li Ren seeds are utilized for their medicinal properties. They are believed to benefit the liver and gallbladder meridians according to TCM theory, and are commonly used to alleviate conditions such as constipation and intestinal stasis due to their laxative effect.
The seeds contain a variety of compounds including fatty oils, glycosides, and bitter principles. They are reported to have a mildly laxative effect, which is attributed to their hydrogogue properties—meaning they increase water in the intestines, thereby promoting bowel movements.
