Gorgon fruit, is the seed of the Euryale ferox plant,
a floating aquatic herb found in slow-moving waters such as ponds and lakes. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), qianshi is valued for its ability to strengthen the kidneys, spleen, and pancreas, and to stabilize the essence (a fluid in TCM believed necessary for reproductive health). It is often used to treat conditions related to these organs, such as diarrhea, frequent urination, chronic fatigue, and reproductive issues.
The seeds are collected when the plant's spiny outer shell turns brown and begins to harden, protecting the dark brown, glossy seeds inside. These seeds are then dried and may be used whole or cracked in various herbal formulations.
Phytochemical analysis has revealed that qianshi contains a variety of compounds, including polysaccharides, proteins, and fatty oils, which are thought to contribute to its medicinal properties. Studies have suggested that these constituents may help improve immune function, enhance antioxidant activity, and have beneficial effects on metabolic disorders.
Modern applications of qianshi extend beyond traditional uses, with some research exploring its potential in treating diabetes, cancer, and bacterial infections.
