I. Place of origin: 

mainly Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Shaanxi, Shanxi 

II. Medicinal material source: 

this product for the Umbelliferae Plant Bupleurum or Bupleurum scorzonerifolium dry roots or whole grass. According to different characters, the former is called“Northern Bupleurum”, the latter called“Southern Bupleurum”. 

III. Harvest and storage: 

Spring and autumn harvest, remove leaves and mud, cut sections, drying. The whole grass is pulled up in late spring and early summer to dry. 

IV. Characters identification: 

1) Bupleurum chinense, cylindrical or long conical, 6-15cm long, 0.3-0.8 cm in diameter. The root head is swollen, the tip remains 3 ~ 15 stem bases or short fibrous leaf bases, the lower part branches. Surface dark brown or light brown, with longitudinal wrinkles, branch root scars and lenticels. Hard and tough, not easy to break, section shows fibrous, skin light brown, yellow-white wood. Smell slightly sweet, taste slightly bitter. 

2) Bupleurum chinense, the root is thin, conic, the tip has many fine hair shape withered leaf fiber, the lower part does not branch or slightly branches. Surface reddish brown or black-brown, near the root head many with a fine ring. Quality slightly soft, easy to break, slightly flat section, does not show fiber.
